Giving a really good back massage is great when you know certain tips and moves. You would be surprised at just how easy it is to learn these techniques. Anyone can learn them.

When giving a back massage, don’t start off rubbing their back with cold hands. Make sure that you rub your hands together, making them nice and warm.

If you are applying oil or lotion on their back, rub your hands together for a few seconds because the oil or lotion might actually be cold. You wouldn’t appreciate it if someone rubbed your back with cold hands, would you?

Start off really slow

Once you know that your hands are warm and just right for the massage, start off really slow. You don’t want to overwhelm them or make them feel anxious with giving them a back massage that could hurt them. If you start off fast, you could do just that.

Start off with your fingertips and work your way down. Always check for knots. Don’t focus on the knots right at the very beginning because your first goal should be to get them relaxed.

After you see they are relaxed, you can start focusing on the knots, applying a little bit of pressure. Don’t apply so much pressure that you risk hurting them.

Be gentle with the pressure and if you hear them moaning in pain, stop what you are doing and go back to the very first step. Using the heel of your hand is a great back massage technique when it is done right.

Try using your forearms

If you see that using the heel of your hand, or your fingertips isn’t working, try using your forearms. Using your forearms is simple. Just start at bottom and work towards the head. Ideally, you should do 6 strokes. Keep in mind that if you do this, the person might have some pain in their lower back, so ask them if they are hurting and make sure it is ok for you to do this type of technique.

The next step is a very important one but a step that many people tend to forget about. When you are giving a back massage to someone, pay attention to how they act and respond. Sometimes they might not always say that you are hurting them out of respect for you.

Watch to see if they are holding on to the chair tighter or if they have a miserable expression on their face. The customers face should only show signs of being fully relaxed. Observe their face even before they sit down and get to know them by their expressions.

Keep the environment calm and peaceful. When you are finished with massaging them, you should be able to notice the relief in their eyes. Once you notice that, you’ll know that they are really happy and stress free.
